I am shocked and impressed by this news.

I figured Volvo's US sales were not going to climb back out of the ditch, long term. I no longer believe that to be the case, if they really do this.

Now, bring back the C30 with an AWD T5 with the goods to battle the STi and RS.

Looks like they are willing to bet a 1/2 billion dollar plant that they can change that.

Volvo has not said which models would be built at the U.S. facility

It's quite obvious. An SUV, a large one preferably. A vehicle with its largest market in the US, not in Europe. Just like what Mercedes is doing with its soccer mom vehicles, like the ML. XC90? XC90!

Let's hope it works. I've seen bigger bets crumble.

"VOLVO CARS TO BE BUILT IN THE US"

Volvo should concentrate on actually selling cars in the US first.

Kinja'd!!! HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles > For Sweden

This is part of that process. Build near the market so as to avoid exchange fluctuations and use the new plant to make big thirsty vehicles best suited to the local market.

The other, Swedish owned Volvo already does just that.

I have to wonder which southern state they will choose.

Well, they used to have a plant in Canada, and they also had that plant in Tennessee that they built but never opened, so I guess this is bringing them full circle. Except their North American sales were way, way, higher the last time they had plants here.

Do they still own the property in TN?

No, Volvo AB kept it, I believe they build Volvo Penta marine engines there now and have a distro center for truck parts.

Hmmm. Well if that was part of the assets that the Chinese bought, it would make sense just to expand the production capabilities.

They tooled it up in the '80s to build 240s, but sales fell below economical levels before they could start production. It was to the point where they could have basically flipped a switch and had 200s rolling off the lines. They mothballed it for a few years, waiting for the situation to improve, and when it didn't, they converted it to other uses. By the time Volvo Cars was split off as a separate company, there were no more car-related operations on the site at all, various other Volvo AB divisions took it over and converted it to other uses. Most of the site is used by Volvo Marine now, and a few other divisions have some smaller operations in the area.
